Emily Kame Kngwarreye lived in the Anmatyerre language group at Alhalkere in the Utopia community, about 250 km north east of Alice Springs. She emerged in the late Twentieth Century as one of Australia’s great modern painters. Kngwarreye’s short, intensive public career spanned early batik works to her final 1996 canvases. Her relationship with the country is revealed as a constant thread connecting her first works with her last.
